5 Simple methods (with step-by-step instructions)

It is a widespread myth that serrated knives cannot be sharpened. That’s just not true. In fact, there are different ways to sharpen serrated knives. Really, it’s not always easy. Cheap micro-stamped knives may not even be worth the time or money to buy sharpening equipment. These and other cheap knives are often regarded as scrap knives, which means that if they become dull or damaged, it is cheaper to replace them than to repair them. And that’s good. Most of us start with this kind of knives until we know that buying cheap knives will cost us more in the long run.
Learning to sharpen serrated knives is different from learning to sharpen straight knives. However, it is not as difficult as most people think when they first broach this subject. Because of the notches on the edge of the blade, most of the blade does not even come into contact with the cutting board, which in any case extends the life of the blade. Combine this with a high-quality serrated bread knife with a hardened steel blade and you will be able to leave long before you have to sharpen it. However, as soon as the knife becomes blunt, you will notice that it no longer cuts into the food to be cleaned. Sometimes the knife starts to tear or tear apart what you’re cutting.
We’ll look at three different ways to sharpen a toothpick knife. Each method differs slightly in complexity and time. The choice of knife depends mainly on the condition of your knife, but also on the tools you have in house. We discuss every option, from the most complex to the simplest.

Method 1: Ceramic grinding rod
This is the hardest and longest way to sharpen a knife with a serrated blade, but fortunately ceramic sharpening bars are cheap. You will also get the best results if your knife is long sharpened or if there are curved points. The ceramic rod is harder than steel and sharpens the scallops. Ceramic rods are very small, usually about 1000 grains. Below are the steps, including links to the products we recommend for this method. Here is a short video that shows the process to the end.
Hold the knife in a knurled position so that the tip of the body points away. Place a ceramic grinding rod in each notch and try to adjust the angle of the notched chamfer as much as possible.
Pull the stick gently and lightly through the shell of the shell. Instead of moving the stick back and forth, we recommend that you slowly pull the stick off the blade to protect your hands from the sharp edges of the knife.
Repeat step 2 several times for each notch. Unfortunately, this is an annoying part of it. But if you keep it up, you’ll get better results than with other methods.
We always recommend further polishing the blade after it has been ground through the leather band on both sides and removing the remaining small burrs.
That’s all it takes to get a nice edge on both sides of your serrated knife. This process is not too complicated, but it takes time. But he’s good at sharpening serrated knives.
Method 2: Spyderco Sharpness control
This method is similar to that described above for sharpening ceramic bars, but a special tool is used to sharpen all types of knives. Although this tool is slightly more expensive than a simple ceramic rod, the Spyderco Sharpmaker remains a cheap tool for most people. It also helps you sharpen all kinds of knives in the kitchen and workshop. That’s why the Sharpmaker is a very popular tool for both athletes and chefs.
Place the tailor on the bench and place the triangular rods in their brackets. Make sure that the tip of the bar remains open on the notched side of the blade and the flat side remains open on the right edge of the blade.
Carefully lower the knife onto the bars at a small angle, several times on each side of the blade. They move slower than usual on the jagged side with a straight knife. Make sure that the blade is covered over the entire length and that the knife stitches on the blade, and if necessary, cover the blade in sections.
Continue this process about 5 to 6 times on each side of the leaf. On the jagged side of the blade, adjust the angle of the blade to the angle of the scallop. On the flat side, the blade should be angled to remove the burrs, but without scratching the surface of the back of the blade.
Pass both sides of the serrated blade through the leather band when you have finished sharpening the knife. This will further polish the knife and remove the remaining small burrs.
That’s all it takes to get a nice edge on both sides of your serrated knife. This method is faster than the first and always works well. The tools you use cost a little more than a ceramic baguette, but it probably costs money if you can’t sharpen a bread knife yet and still have to buy something.
The first two methods are designed for longer sharpening and serrated knives, which have become increasingly boring. On the other hand, the following methods are more useful to get a good edge on the leaf before it becomes too blunt or damaged. These methods are excellent if you use them more often and preventively, instead of waiting until you have a problem.
Method 3: Knives and grinding machines
As mentioned above, we polish the serrated knife with a superior service sharpener, starting with this method. Therefore, the only strip you will use to sharpen your sharpening knives and tools is the 6000 grit strip. Something coarser than that will have a greater impact on the loopholes and they will wear off. The use of fine-grained adhesive tape ensures that the knives are well polished and have sharp edges.
Read and follow the instructions provided with the knife and tool sharpener in case your knife has special features that deviate from these general guidelines.
Install the sanding belt 6000 on the sander.
Carefully pull the flat (unused) side of the blade through the belt. You can pull out the knife several times or go back and forth with the knife.
As mentioned before, this will give you a sharper knife edge, but it won’t take as long as the first few methods mentioned on this page. This is a good, simple and fast method, but it will not solve your problem if you have a very blunt or damaged serrated knife.
Method 4: Electric gear grinding
The use of an electric sharpener on a serrated bread knife is very similar to the previous method. The main difference between this tool and the Chef’s Choice Trizor XV EdgeSelect is that it has built-in guides. This makes it very easy to adjust the knife angle, but at the same time makes it less versatile. You should take this into account when deciding to purchase a tool.
If you only use it to sharpen kitchen knives and you only have the same cutting angle, then an electric sharpener is a good choice! If it doesn’t make much sense, you want to cover all kitchen knives, pocket knives and tools in your shed. Here the knife and tool sharpener of method 3 is most suitable.
Always read the enclosed instructions for sharpening a knurled knife with a power tool. In most cases only 3-step electric sanding (finest grain) is used. In this phase, only the edge of the leaf is ground or polished, just like a leather band.
Insert the knife into the guide in step 3 and pull the knife through the sharpener on each side of the knife 4 to 5 times along its entire length, alternating between the two.
As you can see, using an electric knife sharpener, especially a serrated or bread knife, is a very simple task. Just follow the instructions, because not all models are the same.
Method 5: Sharpening with knives without tools
Alias…such as NOT Sharpen your serrated knives.
You may have witnessed a so-called burglary, in which a serrated knife is sharpened without tools (or even without a knife).
So do you have to use a ceramic plate or a coffee mug to sharpen good knives? The answer is clearly no. This is an inappropriate way to sharpen a knife, especially a knife with a serrated blade.

Of course there are many ways to sharpen serrated knives. We just mentioned four good (and one bad) ways to do this. The purpose of this post was to acknowledge that, although the subject is not well understood by many, it is not so difficult. As we always say, consider your knives an investment. If you buy a sturdy knife, made with high quality materials from a top brand of knives, it will always last and stay sharp longer. If you need to sharpen them, you are in a better position to do so and the new sharper edge will last longer.
